Opinion: Trump provokes Merkel to reveal her true intention of dominating Europe
WSJ, May 30, 2017 (Excerpt y MD)
Donald Trump must have done something right in his first foreign trip as president because he provoked German Chancellor Angela Merkel to let slip how she really feels about running Europe.
“The times in which we could totally rely on others are to some extent over, as I have experienced in the past two days.” (This was a reference to the G7 summit in Sicily.) For good measure she added: “We Europeans must really take our fate into our own hands.”
To be sure, she was speaking her mind. By German standards Mrs Merkel is an Atlanticist. …But continental Europeans must now do more in unison, perhaps with some German convening. On everything from defence integration to EU treaty change her tone has subtly shifted: to something bolder, more open and less brusquely transactional. …The comments are uncontroversial in Germany, as the minute-long applause that greeted them in Munich illustrated. (The Economist May 28th)
“We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military. Very bad for U.S. This will change” (Trump-Tweet, May 30th)
“Even if a new promise were entirely fulfilled by Germany, the country still be spending only 1.2% of GDP on defense in 2020. Meanwhile, Germany’s budget surplus last year reached the highest since reunification. Merkel may be right that, as she stated this weekend, the U.S. is no longer a reliable partner. Germany hasn’t been for a long time.” (Chart, Steve Goldstein May 30th)
German reunification in 1990 ended any chance that France or Britain would be able to counterbalance the largest country in the European Union. The introduction of the euro EURUSD, +0.1702% at the turn of the century, complete with a central bank under Berlin’s thumb in Frankfurt, gave Germany the tool it needed to enforce its discipline across the continent. …Now that British voters have elected to leave the EU and French voters have installed a compliant new president, Merkel is freer than ever to force her will upon the entire continent.
“Merkel saying Europe cannot rely on others & needs to take matters into its own hands is a watershed-& what US has sought to avoid since WW2” (R.N.Haass-Tweet, May 30th)
Let’s face it — World War II has been over for more than 70 years and maybe some of these “elements” have outlived their usefulness or need substantial revamping. Some commentators, like the BBC… Others, like the Guardian… Both might be dangerously facile given the longer term trends in Germany and Europe.
